What is EMDR? Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a simple but efficient therapy using bilateral stimulation (BLS)—eye movements, tactile hand pulses, auditory tones, or tapping—to accelerate the brain's capacity to process and heal disturbing memories, negative cognitions, blocking beliefs, and more. BLS, which occurs naturally during dream sleep, causes the two halves of the brain to work together to reintegrate disturbing memories. Some clients experience positive results or relief in just a few sessions, while others may require numerous sessions. EMDR is effective in alleviating trauma-related symptoms, whether the traumatic event(s) occurred many years ago or a week ago. It provides desired results with little talking, without medication, and with no heavy “homework” between sessions.
